Hold the position. Keep the reasoning.
Money exposes a weakness that most software hides: the difference between knowing a number and being able to explain it.
Regional grain co-op
Why it is held
Local milling is being rebuilt and the co-op owns the site.
What would prove it wrong
Two seasons pass with no milling contract signed.
Illustrative example · a position and its reasoning
The situation
Financial life is spread across institutions that each show a fragment: accounts, holdings, obligations, valuations, transactions. Above that sits the part no institution holds at all, which is the reasoning. Why is this owned, what has to be true for it to make sense, and what would count as being wrong.
How this usually goes
Positions are visible, reasoning is not, so a decision made in one mood is reviewed in another with nothing between them.
Beliefs are recorded after the outcome is known, which is not recording, it is narration.
Exposure is understood per account, so a contradiction across accounts goes unnoticed.
The record of a decision is a screenshot, and a year later it cannot be reconstructed.
What happens here
Hold financial reality in one reconstructable view: what is held, what it is doing, what belief it rests on, and what would prove that belief wrong.
1. Holdings are facts, kept separately from beliefs
What is owned, where, at what cost, with what obligations attached, sourced from the institution rather than from a spreadsheet someone maintains.
2. Reasoning is written before the outcome
A position carries the claim it rests on, and the claim carries what would falsify it, recorded in advance so the review has something to check against.
3. Beliefs have a review cadence
An idea that is never revisited becomes an assumption. Ideas come up for review on a schedule, and closing one records what was believed, what happened, and where the reasoning broke.
4. Exposure is a question you can ask
Because holdings, claims, and drivers are linked records rather than separate documents, the system can answer what is exposed to a given driver and where two beliefs contradict each other.
5. Anything automated carries authority
Execution, rebalancing, or monitoring performed by software runs under explicit delegation with proportional confirmation, and every action records who authorized it.
What stays true
The account of a decision survives the mood that produced it. That is the only defense against the most expensive habit in finance, which is remembering yourself as having been right.
