Let the tools change. Keep the community.
Every platform designs the first day carefully. Almost none design the last one, and that asymmetry tells you exactly what the relationship is.

A move should preserve the meaning.
Readable exports. Published formats. A practical way forward.
Arriving
1. Identity comes with the person
Someone joining brings a verifiable identity rather than creating another local account that becomes another thing to lose.
2. Roles are granted, not assumed
What a new member may do is an explicit grant with an author and a reason, which is also what makes it reviewable later.
3. Context is reachable on day one
Decisions, standards, and reasoning are available to be searched and cited, so a newcomer can find out how things are done without spending someone else's week.
4. The record starts immediately
Membership, role, and grant are part of the community's operating record from the first moment, not a support ticket someone remembers to close.
Leaving
1. Export is a normal operation
Not a support request, not a negotiation, not a rate-limited endpoint that discourages use. A documented, complete, repeatable export.
2. The formats are the ones already published
What leaves is shaped by the same public contracts the system runs on, so it can be read by a system that was never told about us.
3. The map leaves with the records
What the records mean, how they relate, and what produced them travel alongside the data. Receiving your data and understanding it are different things, and only the second one is leaving.
4. Identity survives the departure
A person or a community that leaves keeps a portable identity, so their history elsewhere does not become anonymous the day they go.
The test we hold ourselves to
A community that leaves should be able to keep operating. Not recover, not rebuild, not reconstruct from a spreadsheet of exports. Keep operating. Until that is demonstrably true, the right of exit is a claim rather than a property, which is why it appears on the roadmap as work rather than on this page as a promise.
