Confident error at scale

Essay · Chapter 03
AI removes the friction that used to slow distorted facts down. A wrong answer now arrives in a second, reads fluently, and carries full confidence.

The danger is AI being wrong with confidence, at speed, and at scale.
A distorted fact that takes an hour to write, an afternoon to check, and a day to circulate is contained by its own friction. The same fact produced in a second, reading fluently, indistinguishable from a true one to a reader without the context to check it, is a different kind of hazard. AI never invented distortion; it removed the friction that used to slow distortion down.
The old failure mode was ignorance: people did not know. The new failure mode is confident error: people think they know, because the system told them so, and the system was working from a distorted input.
This is why access to knowledge falls short of understanding. Understanding includes the ability to notice when the input is wrong. That is an intelligence problem, and retrieval alone cannot fix it.
